I promised a longer message than I had sent via US Mail. So, I
am now getting around to it.

As I said, it was nice not being so pressured this past quarter.
I was teaching. I was not supposed to be. However, due to some schedule
changes that I do not want to go into, I was teaching this past quarter
--More--

(not the quarter I wanted to teach) and teaching a class I did not want
to teach (the very first intro class). My class had experienced C pro-
grammers, COBOL programmers and people who had never programmed before.
It makes it difficult to figure out where to target things. Well, at
least I am done with that.
This last quarter I sat in on the AI class (I had taken it last
year). We have a new guy who just finished at MIT in June who started
in July. We really did not have any true AI people, just vision
people. The sort of class they taught for an intro AI class is what
you would expect at a smaller university or a college. It was not the
appropriate level for a top ten school. Anyway, I sat in the class and
did most of the reading. It really was different having the class taught
by someone who knows the field and who gives you modern papers to read.
Although I have taken the second AI class before, I am going to take it
again since this guy, Dan Weld, is teaching it also. I will be doing
research with him this coming quarter as well. He did his dissertation
on qualitative physics. However, the work we will be doing will involve
planning. I am looking forward to finally doing some research as I have
not had a chance to do any since getting here. I will also be taking a
german class to help keep me sharp (although I do go to weekly meetings
of the german table).
Not working quite as hard as I have in the past does mean that I
--More--

may be here a little longer than I would otherwise. However, getting out
of here rarely happens quickly, and I would rather have some pleasant
memories of it happening.

We have been getting all sorts of new equiptment (we always are)
within the past year. The department's backbone machine (june, the one
you send mail to), is now a VAX 8550 with 96 megabytes (a professor on
the lab policy committee said they wanted to get enough memory so that it
would never have to page again). We have also been getting into a lot of
parallel stuff lately. We have a 20 processor Sequent machine for
parallel research. We also have around ten DEC Fireflies. These are
multi-processor (5 processors) workstations. They use the same chip as
micro-vax IIs and IIIs do. The grad student workstations have been
upgraded to micro-vax IIIs, which makes a big difference. When they were
only micro-vax IIs, june had to be really loaded to make it worthwhile to
do your processing on the workstation. However, these new ones are a lot
better (11/780 = Micro-vax II = 1.0; Microvax III = 2.7-4.2; 8550 is
supposed around 6.0. However, that is hard to guage for a machine that
has so much more specialized hardware (I/O channels, faster disks, etc.;
the huge memory makes a difference too)).

My knee is a lot better since the surgery last June. They did
--More--

the right knee this time (it was the left while I was in D.C.). We
thought the problem would turn out to be the same, but it was different
(it was the medial femoral cartilage instead of the medial synovial plica).
It healed much faster than the last time. I went hiking three weeks
after the surgery (you saw me about 8-10 weeks after the operation).
However, I was very cautious about what I did. There is no question that
it is much better. However, I will wait and see what the future holds.
Weekends backpacking and longer trips remain to be seen.

A few weeks ago I got my fifth roommate since moving to Seattle.
I left the first one after a year. I wanted to be closer to the univers-
ity and someone a little closer to my age (he was 21 and had never gone
to college; his lifestyle was quite different). The guy I moved in with
(a spanish guy from the international division of Microsoft) a year ago
September moved out at the end of January to move in with some friends
and to be three blocks from his girlfriend's. Then I had a fellow CS
grad student. She moved out in the middle of Sept. to move in with her
boyfriend (another CS grad student). Then I found a woman working towards
a masters in social work, who was a big sports fan, so that worked well.
However, she worked last year and did not get as much money from her
student loan as she hoped for. So she could not afford the rent (she
moved in with friends of her parents where she will not have to pay
--More--

rent). My latest roommate is someone who was just hired by the CS Dept.
Lab Staff. She is a little older (35), but we get along fine. The only
question is: how long will she stay?

Another advantage of my not being quite so busy is that I have
more time for a social life. Right now at the beginning of the quarter
I am somewhat busy, but that is partially due to social committments that
I made long ago. My social life has not advanced to the point that I
have a girlfriend, but I am working on it.

Over the winter break Jesse Gordon visited me (since his
brother- in-law works for an airline he gets cheap flights). We played
bridge and did well the first time, but came in three boards below
average the second time. Mike Cerceo was already out of town when
Jesse got here and Janice Chaffee was busy, but Hugh did join us for
dinner one night. There are a lot less people I know in Tacoma these
days now that Mary Breeden, Marc and Bob Shumaker are gone. Cerceo
says that they have twiced asked him about moving to Denver, which he
is not that fond of doing (not that he dislikes Denver so much, but he
would just like to stay somewhere; he also is not so happy with all the
travel that he and Hugh are having to do to Denver).

     the future.

Hello from Tandy Towers in Fort Worth. Just thought I would try out
the uucp path and see if it worked. While I was there I didn't get the
path for Michele, could you send it back to me if you get the chance.
By the way, when I checked for paths from this end there appear to be tow
available. Which of the two below do you recommend or does it make a
difference:

Subject: Mike Cerceo leaves

Well, finally Mike Cerceo is leaving BDM. This Friday is his
last day of work. Two weeks from today he is scheduled to start work
at a placed called Morph (sp?) in Tacoma. They produce machines that
do automatic fingerprint matching and/or verification. He is also
--More--

checking into a job at a place that does commercial packet radio stuff.

I think this leaves about three people still working out here
for BDM from the multitude that moved out here a few years ago. Mike
is really looking forward to leaving. He said that Pat Riedl was not
suprised, which suprised him.
